Last appeals before Hockey Federation meeting
Several prominent organizations and persons have joined with calls for removing the 2014 World Championship from Belarus, just before the International Ice Hockey Federation will consider at its Annual Meeting in Helsinki whether to remove the Championship from Belarus.
- Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) and Freedom House released an Open Letter to International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) President René Fasel opposing Belarus to host the 2014 Ice Hockey World Championship in Minsk. The letter was also signed by 23 senior politicians and experts, including Guy Verhofstadt (former Prime Minister of Belgium) and Graham Watson (President of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party). CEPA and Freedom House also joined our campaign as supporters.
- A group of 28 members of the US House of Representatives led by Democrat Mike Quigley and Republican John Shimkus, called on the International Ice Hockey Federation to remove World Championship 2014 from Minsk.
- Former President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek called the chairman of the Polish Ice Hockey Federation (PIHF) Zdzislaw Ingieliewicz to raise a question at a congress of the International Ice Hockey Federation on May 17 on moving the 2014 championship from Minsk.
- Sir Tom Stoppard (playwrighter), Natalia Kaliada and Nikolai Khalezin (political refugees, Belarus Free Theatre), Irina Krasovskaya (wife of kidnapped and murdered political and public figure A. Krasovsky, President of We Remember Foundation) and Irina Bogdanova, sister of former prisoner of conscious Andrei Sannikov and Founder of FreeBelarusNOW! urged the IIHF congress members to relocate the World Championship 2014 from Belarus.
